BOTOX® and other paralytics

BOTOX® is a medication that is synthesized in the lab and injected into the skin. It acts to temporarily relax muscles. The wrinkles between the eyebrows, the wrinkles on the forehead, and the wrinkles around the eyes are caused by contraction of the underlying muscles. When the muscle contracts, it wrinkles the overlying skin. BOTOX® prevents the muscle from contracting, and therefore, stops the wrinkling of the overlying skin.

BOTOX® has been used in the United States for more than 20 years and is an extremely safe medication. BOTOX® can be used to relax the muscles that cause the 11’s or the wrinkles between the eyebrows, the wrinkles on the forehead, and the wrinkles caused by smiling around the eyes. There are also some special uses of BOTOX. In rare occasions, it can be used in the neck to prevent increased contraction of the neck platysma muscles. This can help smooth the neck contour in patients whose platysma muscle contracts too much and causes lines in the middle part of the neck. BOTOX® can also be used on the palms and in the armpit regions to control excess sweating. BOTOX® can be used for almost everyone, takes just a few seconds to administer and is virtually painless. The effects of BOTOX® take about 4 to 6 days to take effect, and each treatment lasts for about 3-4 months.

Recently, several other chemicals that function just like BOTOX® have been released and FDA-approved including Dysport®, and Xeomin®. All of these compounds function in the same manner as BOTOX®. Many salons and spas offer injectable treatments like BOTOX® and Restylane in Houston with many injectors having little experience in injecting and tailoring each injection for the patient. Many injectors in spas and salons are not even physicians. At AFA, each injection is customized for a patient’s unique needs, and all injections are performed by Dr. Athré; providing a more natural result with minimal downtime and bruising.
