What Is Botox?
Repeated facial movements can contribute to expression lines between the eyebrows, across the forehead, and around the eyes.
Botox Cosmetic is a prescription neuromodulator made with botulinum toxin type A. When injected into targeted facial muscles, it temporarily reduces the nerve signals that cause those muscles to contract. This reduction in muscle activity can soften dynamic wrinkles—the lines that become more noticeable with expressions such as frowning, squinting, or raising the eyebrows.
Athré Facial Plastics also offers Dysport, another botulinum toxin type A neuromodulator. Botox and Dysport are different formulations with different dosing characteristics, and their units are not interchangeable. Dr. Athré can recommend the product and treatment approach that best fit your facial anatomy and goals.

What is the Botox Procedure like?
Botox injections take only a few minutes and typically require no anesthesia. Most patients experience only brief discomfort during treatment.
Using a very fine needle, Dr. Athré injects Botox into specific facial muscles based on your anatomy, muscle movement, and treatment goals. The number and location of injections vary depending on the areas being treated. Treatment is performed in the office, and most patients can return to their normal activities shortly afterward.

What Areas Can Botox Treat?
Botox can treat expression lines in the upper face as well as visible platysma bands in the neck.
BOTOX Cosmetic is FDA-approved to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines and bands associated with muscle activity in several areas:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
- Crow's feet around the eyes (lateral canthal lines)
- Vertical neck bands (platysma bands)

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox?
Botox may be appropriate for healthy adults who want to soften expression lines caused by repeated facial movement while maintaining a natural-looking result.
Botox is not appropriate for everyone. Tell Dr. Athré if you have had an allergic reaction to a botulinum toxin product, have an infection at a proposed injection site, or have a condition that affects your muscles or nerves. You should also discuss any swallowing or breathing problems, medications and supplements you take, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
During your consultation, Dr. Athré will review your medical history, facial anatomy, muscle movement, and aesthetic goals to determine whether Botox is appropriate for you.
Botox Recovery and Results
Botox requires minimal downtime. Results may begin to appear within 1–2 days and typically continue to develop after treatment.
For forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet, full results may take up to 30 days to develop. Results are temporary and can last up to four months, although individual experiences vary.
Temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or discomfort can occur around the injection sites. Most patients can return to their normal daily routine immediately after treatment. Dr. Athré will provide aftercare instructions based on your treatment. Tell him about medications and supplements you take, including aspirin-like products or blood thinners, and follow his guidance rather than stopping medications or supplements on your own.
Botox can also cause side effects such as headache, drooping of the eyelid or brow, and other eye-related symptoms. Rare but serious effects can occur if the effects of botulinum toxin spread beyond the injection area. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing after treatment.
