This simple procedure can help reverse signs of aging and add natural-looking volume to the cheek and lower eyelid. Have you noticed hollow-looking lower eyelids, dark circles around your eyes, or a deep ridge near your lower eyelid and cheek? The area around the lower eyelid and cheek is extremely delicate and is usually one of the first areas to show aging.
Houston facial plastic surgeon Dr. Raghu Athré offers OcuRx, a special filler procedure to rejuvenate the under-eye area using Restylane or another hyaluronic acid filler.
The recovery following OcuRX treatment is very similar to recovery after any filler treatment. Patients are asked to apply ice for the balance of the day. Patients are also asked to be gentle with their face, and avoid strenuous activity and exercise for the balance of the day. Most patients are allowed to return back to normal activity the following day.
One thing that makes OcuRX different from other fillers is that bruising, swelling, and edema after the procedure are very normal due to the fact that the lower eyelid region is very vascular. Patients are still able to wear makeup immediately after their treatment. However, patients are counseled that bruising can be noticeable for 3-4 days following the procedure. Final results of the OcuRx filler treatment are visible at approximately 4 days after the treatment. The OcuRX filler treatment lasts for approximately 1 year following treatment. This is different from other filler treatments that last normally 6-9 months. The reason for this is that the lower eyelid complex does not have a lot of dynamic motion. For example, lips move a lot, and therefore filler in the lips is broken down a lot more quickly.
OcuRX takes about 30 minutes and is done in the office. The procedure is done under local anesthesia with no pain or discomfort and normally lasts upwards of 8 to 9 months. OcuRx is a very technically demanding procedure. The under eye region is very sensitive, delicate, and requires careful attention with respect to the placement and the amount of filler used. The first portion of the OcuRx procedure is anesthesia. Topical numbing cream is applied to the under eye area and left there for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
The second step of the OcuRx procedure is the medial filling. In this part, the patient is asked to sit upright and focus on a point visually just above the visual plane. Filler is then carefully deposited along the bone of the orbital rim in tiny, tiny amounts. Following the second step, the lateral portion of the lower eyelid complex is filled. This area can be filled either along the bone, or with a micro-cannula in the deep tissues. A micro-cannula is a small, thin, and blunt-tipped metal straw that allows thin threads of filler to be applied. Following injection of the filling agent, light molding and massage over the lower eyelid region are performed to mold the filler and ensure no irregularities. After both sides are addressed, ice is applied before the patient is allowed to be discharged from the office.
