    Special Types of Upper Blepharoplasty

Dr. Athre performs several types of specialized upper blepharoplasty procedures for customized results for his eyelid surgery patients.

Upper blepharoplasty is the name given to a procedure that deals with the form and function of the upper eyelid.

There are several special types of upper blepharoplasty that require discussion.

    Asian Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty

The Asian upper eyelid is different from a Caucasian upper eyelid. The Asian upper eyelid:

    1. May lack an upper eyelid crease
    2. May have a partial upper eyelid crease
    3. May have significant fatty tissue of the upper eyelid
    4. May have the medial canthus connected to the nasal skin with a fold of tissue

Asian patients may elect to have an Asian upper eyelid blepharoplasty to “westernize” the upper eyelid by modifying some of the above characteristics to achieve a double eyelid.

Representation of Asian Double Eyelid Surgery

Asian Double Eyelid surgery is not difficult for a surgeon such as Dr. Athre who has done thousands of upper blepharoplasty procedures. But, it does require careful analysis to determine the most natural result, and prevent an overoperated look.

    eyelid ptosis

    Ptosis Surgery

Ptosis specifically means droopiness. It is the name of the condition commonly referred to as a lazy eye.

Ptosis surgery is a special case of upper blepharoplasty surgery where the upper lid position is corrected to achieve symmetrically shaped eyes.

Similarities and differences of Ptosis and Asian Upper Eyelid Surgery to standard upper blepharoplasty

Both of these special circumstance are very similar to upper blepharoplasty in that:

    1. The incision is the same (in the upper eyelid crease)
    2. Local anesthesia is the preferred anesthesia type
    3. The overall procedure is relatively the same
    4. The postoperative period, recovery period, and postoperative downtime are the same

The procedures differ from upper blepharoplasty in that:

    1. They require more dissection and require modification of the muscle (levator aponeurosis)
    2. The time of surgery is increased. A standard blepharoplasty takes approximately 40 minutes, and Asian upper eyelid or ptosis surgery takes about 1.5 hours
    3. The cost is subsequently slightly more with prices starting at $3,250
